My Extended Essay

My Extended Essay (EE) subject was Psychology. The topic was memory consolidation in sleep cycles. I'm very fascinated with memory and especially how our brains work. I had trouble writing the essay since my 1st draft was too much about the biological aspect of the brain. An example would be how exertion affects the brain. Later my topic evolved into one concerning memory and sleep. I might still have some old notes somewhere. But, on to the 'resource'.

I found highly interesting book about memory; some say that it is an excellent work about memory. It is called "Searching for Memory: the brain, the mind and the past" by Daniel L. Schacter.

One review stated that " -- [a] compelling, readable overview of what scientists know about human memory".

The books has chapters about how memories are built and for example, about memory distortion and amnesia.  The capabilities and limits of the brain are very interesting to read about in this work. It was a very interesting book for me, a psychology student, when I was studying the subject. It inspired me to write about memory in my EE.

A cluster of resources for IB students

Here's is a site that provides a lot and I mean a lot of resources for not only students taking IB Biology but also general Biology students and for other subjects as well! At the bottom of the page you can see links for these subjects, each giving an extensive list of free resources for you to use.

Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, Environmental systems, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology and Spanish.

For the subject of Biology, for example, there are links to reliable websites such as BBC and University of Arizona containing information about Biology.

There are also a lot of notes from different educational sites. Notes for at least SL students are provided.
Very many sites listed there involve studying DNA (DNA profiling) and the genome.

Biology for life is also an amazing site which I highly suggest visiting! It is all about IB Biology in a very accessible format.

For Finnish IB students - Poetry Analysis

During my Finnish A studies our teacher gave us this link which has all of the terms needed and related to poetry and poetry analysis. It includes examples of every figure of speech that need to be known for the final exams. It is a glossary of sorts including terms for the lengths of poetry and what irony or comedy are.

For English students - Of Mice and Men

Here's a version of the novella Of Mice and Men which I read for English A Language and Literature course. I used a different one but it seems to have disappeared from the internet.

I also used Spark Notes for essays and homework to help me understand the book better. It feels cheating but will make your workload much easier to handle! It has everything you need: motifs, key character analysis, section by section analysis and themes for example.

I like this site. You could say that I'm biased. I suggest registering. The forums are really nice and they help you very quickly if you have a question. But of course it is not mandatory. There's a section just for the IB if you go to the A-levels drop down menu. In my opinion the layout of this is much nicer than S-cool one. There's help for almost everything related to university studies. If you need a break from studying there's also a forum section for other interests like video games or relationships.

There's info on UCAS, personal statements, revision tips and all-around.

This I used for finding more about different universities around United Kingdom, since I was very interested in going abroad to study. From there you can also see other people's applications and how they have scored upon applying to specific universities. This is called University Connect. For example, Goldsmiths:

If you are struggling with the preparatory year of IB (the first year that is) this site has a lot to offer. It is very understandable and easily explains main concepts in Biology and Chemistry. A-levels are to some extent comparable to IB studies, (to _some_ extent) so they are useful. You do not need to register even though there are prompts everywhere.

There are other things on the site as timetable and a forum but I have never used them so I don't know they are helpful or not.

When you go to a certain subject the site opens a list of topics covered. I found similarities between the IB syllabus and the listed topics and that is why I studied using this site,

There are also resources for GCSEs. There are some topics which are in the syllabuses IB subjects so I advise you take a look at them. The information on the topics is picture.heavy which I really like. If you want more in-depth knowledge I suggest another sites or if you would like a different layout or structure.
